Identity?
[edit]Hi Daderot - File:Sequoia - Stanley M. Rowe Arboretum - DSC03313.JPG remains the last entry in Category:Unidentified Sequoioideae. Do you know if it is wood from Sequoia sempervirens, or Sequoiadendron giganteum? Or can you ask the Arboretum staff if they know? It must be known which, but I've not been able to trace any info on their website or elsewhere. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 16:14, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hi MPF! Hope you are doing well.... unfortunately I live far, far away from that arboretum so I cannot easily ask. Since I am not a botanist, I simply copy the information displayed. Alas! In this case it does not seem sufficient. I'm sorry about that. Your classification work is very admirable - you are doing a wonderful job. I'm just sorry I can't help here.... Daderot (talk)
- OK, thanks for checking! - MPF (talk) 16:19, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
Incorrect species photo being used for Hypolepis punctata article.
[edit]Hello. I noticed the photo being used for the Hypolepis punctata article.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypolepis_punctata
The photo is of the Dwarf Elkhorn Fern (Etc.) Polypodium punctatum 'Grandiceps'. The correct scientific name for that species WAS Polypodium punctatum (L.) Sw.'Bold text' which is now a synonym of Microsorum punctatum (L.) Copel.
Hypolepis punctata (Thumb.) Mett. was formerly Polypodium punctatum Thumb... Your article is correct, but not the photo. Hypolepis punctata fronds are "ferny" like "normal" ferns. See if you can find a correct photo.
Remember, there were FOUR different Polypodium punctatum named by four different authors of four different species...
Polypodium punctatum Thunb.=Hypolepis punctata (Thunb.) Mett.
Polypodium punctatum Spruce (or Spruce ex Hook)=Stigmatopteris lechleri (Mett.) C.Chr.
Polypodium punctatum Hook.=Grammitis punctata Raddi
Podypodium punctatum (L.) Sw.=Microsorum punctatum (L.) Copel. — Preceding unsigned comment added by L.Miller (talk • contribs) 09:37, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
If you check with Plants of the World Online, go to the homepage and type in Polypodium punctatum and you will see all four. — Preceding unsigned comment added by L.Miller (talk • contribs) 10:05, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- Greetings! thanks for your very helpful and informative note - it is much appreciated. I'm not a botanist and so rely upon the markers set out next to plants. If these are not correct, please feel free to revise the article or the photo to fix things. with thanks again and all best wishes, Daderot (talk)

They are something of a unicorn : unique, rare and elusive. I found your photo of a collection of adders that included an MBC that I have never seen or heard of. I own four different styles of MBC adders : Arithma, Magic Brain, Ve-po-ad and, the fourth, a mystery style. Your picture shows a fifth mystery style. These two mystery styles are constructed like no other adder in the world. They are not knock offs but original designs. Any information you can share will be greatly appreciated.

- It might be worth writing directly to the Ridai Museum. Map uploads
[edit]Hi Daderot! I appreciate your recent map uploads, but I do have some suggestions:
- Be careful not to upload duplicates - unless there are substantial differences between them, we don't need multiple copies of the same map. I've deleted several of your recent uploads that were exact duplicates of existing files.
- Please give a source link, rather than just "Digital Commonwealth". That makes it easier to understand the provenance.
- For licensing, you can use {{PD-scan|PD-US-expired}}. The PD-scan note is useful to clarify that scans don't have independent copyright, and the 70-year rule is only applicable when the author's death year is known.
- There's no need to include source information in the filename - it makes the filename longer, which makes scanning through categories less easy.
Thanks, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 02:38, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Pi..., Thank you for your note. Actually if memory serves me correctly (and it sometimes doesn't), each image that you deleted was MUCH HIGHER resolution than the existing image, say 30 MB instead of 3 MB. This is useful to those of us who sometimes use portions of maps, which can be blurry and indistinct on lower-resolution images. I won't go back and upload them again but do regret their loss. with best wishes for the holiday, Daderot (talk)
- Don't worry, I too enjoy the tiny details :) The few that I deleted were exactly the same pixel dimensions and thus from the same original scan; the larger filesize was due to using a higher JPG quality setting (probably 100 versus 95) when converting from that scan. For old maps, I don't find that difference to be perceptible, and the larger filesize takes longer to load / can freeze tabs. If you do find a quality difference, the ideal thing to do would be to upload the TIFF version (they're available on the BPL site for the ones you've been uploading) under the same filename with the different extension - that gives us the lossless original plus the quick-loading JPG. Pierre Rodier locomotive photo
[edit]I have done a lot of research on this engine. Thank you so much for posting it.
However the correct title should be:
Miniature locomotive which was exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in the Crystal Palace, London, and won a medal at the 1855 exhibition of the Michigan State Agricultural Society, made by Pierre Rodier, Saint-Hyacinthe, 1848-1850, iron, brass - Château Ramezay - Montreal, Canada - DSC07567.jpg
Pierre Rodier was living in Detroit in 1855 and that is why it was exhibited there. Hope you don't mind me suggesting this.
- Greetings! Thank you so much for your helpful advice. As for me, I know very little - I just copied the text from the exhibit in Château Ramezay. Here's what I suggest - since I do not have the permission to change filenames myself, you can simply add a "rename" request to the file, giving the name that you think is best. Then an administrator will change the name. Thank you again! and hope this helps - Daderot (talk)
Location correction for Monodechenella macrocephala photo
[edit]The file name for your photo of Monodechenella macrocephala for says that the fossil was collected in "Livingstone Country, NY." That's almost certainly a typo. It should probably say "Livingston County, NY."
- Yes, I think you are 100% right. thank you! I cannot rename the file myself (as I don't have the permission) - do you know how to ask for a file to be renamed? If so, then some administrator will do it. with thanks and all best wishes - Daderot (talk)

Image use | May I?
[edit]Hi Daderot, May I use this picture for advertising for a regionally active real estate company in Switzerland? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Revolving_House_by_Paul_Klee,_1921_AD,_gouache_on_cheesecloth_on_paper_-_Museo_Nacional_Centro_de_Arte_Reina_Sof%C3%ADa_-_DSC08792.JPG Thanks in advance for your answer Folgl.ich (talk) 15:15, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, please feel free. I put my photographs into the public domain, which means that you can use them any way you want, for profit or whatever. As far as I know, Paul Klee's images are also in the public domain. Thank you for asking, and all best wishes to you, Daderot (talk) 21:52, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you very much Daderot – you make a Swiss graphic designer happy. All the best for you! Folgl.ich (talk) 08:49, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

[edit]I edited the caption of the photo you posted in Wikimedia to Henry from Hugh here. The explanation is in the Edit summary. I don't know how to change the file name so the file name is still Hugh. I'm solid on the correctness of the change though I guess you could revert my edit if you disagree and/or just don't want to finish the job for me. I'd understand. Cheers, thanks. Message stick
[edit]Please note that this image here is not a message stick: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Australian_Aboriginal_message_stick,_c._1912_-_Etnografiska_museet_-_Stockholm,_Sweden_-_DSC01365.jpg#metadata It is a sacred object that is restricted in parts of Western Australia and should only be seen by initiated. Ideally the image should be removed since it can cause distress in certain Indigenous communities. I recognise that it is on public display in a Swedish museum and that's their business but it's annoying that a search of "message stick" brings up this object. Could you either: take down the image or rename it. The object in this image is a tjurunga. An explanation of the difference between a message stick and a tjurunga is here: https://messagesticks.com.au/about/how-to-identify-a-message-stick/
- Greetings - Thank you for bringing this up. If you check the history, you will see that I called it an "unidentified object" but someone else renamed the file as a message stick; in fact I am ignorant as to what it is. I do not have the ability to rename the file, but you can ask for it to be renamed and someone with authority will probably do so. with all best wishes, Daderot (talk) 10:31, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Gloucester, Eastern Point, Beauport, Cover for Antiques Calendar 1968, by Samuel Chamberlain, 1928-1971, from the Digital Commonwealth - commonwealth fj238m01j.tif. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Hello, Daderot. In 2019, you created Category:Royal Brewster Smith. I think it might be a duplicate of Category:Royall Brewster Smith. What do you think? -- Auntof6 (talk) 12:31, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Auntof6, I strongly suspect that you are right. There does seem to be some confusion as to how his name might be spelled (not a surprise). See these two conflicting pages for someone who seems to be the same person:
- It seems to me that the categories should be merged, that is, all paintings moved to one of the two, and the other redirected to it. But I don't care which spelling is used - do you? If so, why don't you just go ahead?
- By the way, I have greatly admired your work adding detailed information to paintings. Thank you and hurrah!
- Daderot (talk) 12:41, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply. I redirected the newer one (the one you created) to the older one, partly because the old one was there first and partly because it has more categories and it connects to a Wikidata item.
- Thanks for your kind words. I enjoy working on painting files and categories, especially the kinds of paintings that interest me most. I often find categories for paintings in a museum that have absolutely no categories to indicate what is depicted, and I try to remedy that. -- Auntof6 (talk) 13:07, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
"Books about"
[edit]https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Ralph_Chaplin_IWW_booklet.jpg&diff=prev&oldid=849899672 seems wrong to me. If this is a "book about the IWW", then a French passport is a "book about France". Pretty sure we wouldn't say that, so I'm reverting you here. - Jmabel ! talk 23:48, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
- Greetings! Well, you are certainly right about that. Thank you for correcting my mistake. with best wishes, Daderot (talk) 10:51, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

Apologies, the file that I uploaded over the above was a mistake, and I was not able to revert it. JMK (talk) 13:33, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi JMK, thanks for your friendly note. Actually I am quite happy with your version, so I'd be glad to keep it. But if you want me to revert things, just ask and I'll give it a go. with all best wishes to you, and thanks for all the work you've been doing - Daderot (talk) 14:57, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
File:Pluricarpellatia, Brazil - Museum fur Naturkunde, Berlin - DSC00079.JPG
[edit]Dear Daderot,
would you mind checking the filename and categories of the above-mentioned file? As far as I can see the picture does not show a specimen of Pluricarpellatia peltata but Jaguariba wiersemana. The specimen was pictured in the first description of Pluricarpellatia peltata as a yet undescribed „Taxon A“ see Fig. 6 here and later on described as Jaguariba wiersemana see Fig. 2 here
Thanks for the trouble & best regards

- Greetings! Thank you so much for the correction. I'm just a photographer, and know nothing about biology. Even so, I found your references very interesting and of course most useful. Why don't you go ahead and request the renaming, as you seem much more authoritative than I? Again, many thanks to you for the correction. with best wishes, Daderot (talk) 10:41, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

Overwriting photos of tea bowls
[edit]Hallo, and thank you for the images. Of course. I do have a question, why is the object information in the title but not in the description text? I am trying to copy and paste manually and complete the information also with external links, for example here File:Tea bowl, known as Iwao, Karatsu ware, Hori garatsu type, Azuchi-Momoyama to Edo period, 1500s-1600s AD, ceramic - Tokyo National Museum - Ueno Park, Tokyo, Japan - DSC08893.jpg . Your help in this would be greatly appreciated, I know it's daunting, but it would be very valuable. Thank you. Gryffindor (talk) 10:34, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
ps: For this image File:Tea bowl, known as Suchiro, studio of Chojiro, Raku ware, Kuroraku type, Azuchi-Momoyama to Edo period, 1500s-1600s AD, ceramic - Tokyo National Museum - Ueno Park, Tokyo, Japan - DSC08889.jpg I tried finding it in the database but it only shows a bowl called "Suehiro" and not "Suchiro". Would you be able to verify please? [4]. Thank you. Gryffindor (talk) 11:04, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- Greetings - yes, right you are. "Suchiro" seems to be my typo for "Suehiro". Here's a google arts photo that seems to show exactly that bowl, correctly named: [5]. As for having info in the title but not description, I often upload fairly large batches of images; it's important to have as much detail as possible for each, but very tedious to give a separate description for each image. I guess this is a roundabout way of saying "laziness".
- Also thank you for reverting your overwrites of my photos. It is much appreciated.Daderot (talk) 13:04, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for the confirmation. Well you added all the information necessary in the title, which is very helpful already. If you have a chance to clean-up the description text and add more information that would be fantastic. I went ahead and cleaned up Category:Azuchi-Momoyama ceramics in the Tokyo National Museum with your images, please take a look. Your help in completing this task would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Gryffindor (talk) 21:11, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
Copyvio of your image
[edit]Hallo, someone took your image and uploaded it as theirs, see File:Momoyama to Edo period, 1500s-1600s AD, ceramic - Tokyo National Museum - var.jpg . I tried to have it deleted as a duplicate, to no avail. You might want to chime in and request it as the author. Gryffindor (talk) 12:37, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- hi Gryffindor! Well, it seems a bit odd but harmless. Evidently they transferred it from the german version of wikipedia. I happen to like your cleaned-up version better, and this new version is kind of low resolution - but I did put the image in the public domain, so people can reuse it as they like. with all best wishes, thanks again for the heroic work in annotating so many images, and hope you are having a pleasant summer.
